Area Law Enforcement
Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered many other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state early analysis indicate the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in connection with the event," they commented.
City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for details.
A high-ranking official said the incident left him without words and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
